OK, the best way to get to the chatroom is to install an IRC chat program and click the bottom link above.

The java link is hassle free, but it may take a while to start up. If you get a security dialog, click Yes or Accept. Lots of names on the server are registered, so if you suddenly end up as Guest12345 (or similar), it's because you used a registered name. You can register your nickname too, details can be found here: How to register your nickname

There are several good chat programs available for free. There's an IRC extension called Chatzilla for the Firefox browser. Personally I used to use mIRC when on Windoze (and I used to do so under WINE on linux until I discovered the KDE app Konversation).
